Watching someone else do a problem doesn’t teach you to do it. You have to work it yourself. Close the video, put away the answer key, and do the problem. Every time you get stuck, that’s exactly where you need to spend more time.
Math is sequential. Algebra depends on arithmetic. Geometry depends on algebra. When a student hits a wall in a new topic, the issue is usually an unresolved gap in a previous one. Go back and find the gap before pushing forward.
Forty-five minutes of focused practice five days a week beats three hours the night before the test. Math is built through repetition over time — the same way athletic skills are built. Consistency matters more than volume.
Students who show their work can find their own mistakes. Students who skip steps have no way to identify where an error happened. Show all work on every problem, even the ones that feel easy. It’s the habit that prevents small errors from compounding.
“I don’t get it” isn’t a specific enough question to get a useful answer. “I don’t understand why you subtract here instead of divide” is specific. The more specifically a student can describe their confusion, the faster it gets resolved.
Timed practice tests without notes, in a quiet space, without stopping — before the real test. Knowing the material is different from being able to produce it under test conditions. Practice both separately.
